Internships & MS Degree FAQs

Yes, CSI graduate students (MS and PhD) are allowed to perform internships with the consent of their advisor. If students are receiving funding from Emory University, the funding will be paused while the student is away on internship. The program will provide necessary resources for students to research the best internship program that will benefit their area of study.

A student will be allowed to perform an internship beyond the summer semester if they have both the consent of the DGS and their advisor.

  1. Identify an internship. The student must identify an internship that is appropriate for his/her interests, knowledge, skills, educational objectives, and schedule. However, obtaining an internship (either paid or volunteer) depends entirely upon an agreement between the student and the employer.
  2. Obtain Approval and Enroll in appropriate research course: Student must gain inform advisor about internships and also gain approval to register for either CS 599R or CS 799R. When seeking advisor/DGS enrollment approval, you should provide your internship offer letter and a written statement (50-100 words) of how the internship experience can enrich your program of study or research.
  3. Written Report: The week prior to the summer grading period, you must provide a written report (250-300) words describing your internship activity, including goals/objectives, what was done, any outcomes and how it has enriched your program of study. You should prepare this report, but it should be endorsed and signed by your internship supervisor, who will also be asked to complete a short evaluation survey.
  4. International Students: Consult with ISSS regarding your summer plans.
